ABSTRACT
In this lecture I will defend the traditional argument that sometime in the medieval/early modern era Europe took a historical path that set it decisively apart from other civilizations. This idea is regularly confused with the claim that medieval/early modern Europe was already more advanced in terms of overall economic performance, technological capability, and living standards. Historians of Europe deserve blame for this confusion. I agree with Pomeranz, Goldstone, Wong, and Hobson that some economic trends attributed to early modern Europe, and labeled as demonstration of a unique pattern of intensive growth were also experienced in traditional China, Japan, and India. The Eurocentric argument, however, was never that medieval Europe was already wealthier and more developed than China. It is that Europe, from the twelfth century onwards, showed itself to be a great learner, and this "modern" cultural trait gave it a unique developmental dynamic.
